Fitzgerald signs a new deal

photo courtesy of azcardinals.comAfter a long drawn out negotiation process, the Cardinals and Larry Fitzgerald agreed on a 4 year $40 million contract. This new contract will save the Cardinals almost $9 million on the salary cap
According to the story on Fitzgerald’s personal website(click here for story), Larry will earn $33 million in the first three years of the deal, with $30 million guaranteed. That story also says Fitzgerald gets a no-trade clause. Fitzgerald will receive a $15 million signing bonus and a $2 million salary in 2008.
What a huge relief the news of this contract is. I was sick thinking that there was a chance Fitzgerald could be traded to another team. It seemed like if a deal wasn’t able to be done, a trade would almost be better for the Cardinals rather than keep Larry’s huge contract. But how often do you see teams getting better by trading away future HOF’s? This was a very important move for the Cardinals to make.
This contract seems fair for both sides. But one would have to think Anquan Boldin’s agent immediately started to work numbers and make calls when he saw this deal go threw. So expect some contract talks to start between the Cardinals and Boldin in the up and coming months.
This is a good day for Arizona Cardinal fans, we kept our All Pro WR and gained some cap room. Now lets re-sign some guys and get busy in free agency.
